Promonte, Montenegro

Montenegro is now in the process of becoming an independent state after a referendum which was held in May this year. With a population of 650,000 Montenegro is going to be one of the smallest countries in Europe. But for Promonte - the largest mobile operator in the country and for its owner Norwegian Telenor - Montenegro is an exciting market where tourists are important customers. Today the cell phone penetration is approximately 90%, and still growing. According to Kåre Gustad, Promonte’s new CEO, Promonte has a strong position with a market share of 60 %.

Telenor started Promonte as a join venture in 1996. As of two years ago Telenor controls 100% of Promonte.

Telenor is among the leading mobile groups in the world with approximately 90 million subscribers in 12 countries in Europe and Asia. This includes both operations in advanced, mature market such as Scandinavia and several emerging markets in Asia with large potential for future growth.

Telenor has used Lots® as the tool for strategy planning at its Headquarters for many years and has, during the last 4 years started to use this tool in its international operations. “Lots® is a very intense and effective tool for making strategic plans. It is very concrete and straight to the point”, Kåre Gustad says. “Before going into a session with Lots®, we used to bring in someone to give us food for thought. With Lots® we are working on our real issues all the time. It is very important to have sufficient focus on the future”.
