Drug Management and Informatics (DMI)

DMI

Maria von Witting is a manager in Drug Management and Informatics (DMI), a department of health within the County Council. DMI’s mission is to be a knowledge center ; to produce knowledge and tools for providing the healthy use of medicine within healthcare.

Medication is the single most common treatment method in Swedish healthcare. Medication increases the quality of life and also decreases mortality rates, time spent in the hospital, sickness and suffering. DMI works to create and support conscious prescription of medication through developing, testing and offering knowledge. Among other things, DMI has developed “the Smart List” which recommends safe medications, educates doctors and does research and follow-up on prescriptions. Also, they have developed e-services within medication, such as e-prescriptions in Stockholm and an interactive service that warns against counteractive medication. They hope to soon be able to expand this interactive service to all of Sweden. DMI also has a website which offers collected, non-commercial information about medication.

DMI has been working with Lots® for some time.

Why did you turn to Scandinavian Leadership?
We felt that we wanted to find a structured model for our activity plan and focus even more on our clients. At the same time we needed to make our planning more effective and efficient.

How has Lots® helped you?
Lots® helped us find a way of working in structured planning sessions where we feel confident that we cover what’s important to us. The fact that we work with the Five Aspects as a base has helped us further. Now we have a good foundation to start planning our activities. I am well aware that the result depends on how we use what we’ve got. It’s our plan, we own it, and it’s our responsibility to continue the work ahead. Our work has just begun, but it feels really good.

How was working with the facilitator from the Scandinavian Leadership?
Great. Charlotte Höije has shown a great deal of personal commitment and is very competent.

What challenges lie ahead?
For several years the cost of medication been increasing. We have an aging population that will need safe and efficient care, and in many areas improved diagnostics enable us to treat many more people. In all of this we need to prioritize more and make sure we do the right things. The current financial situation has also affected how we work.
